A little bit different from normal

10 January 2024

It’s January, it’s cold, it’s wet, we’re back to work and school, Christmas is a distant memory and Easter a mere dot on the horizon. So what’s different to do to perk up a January weekend? Well if you’re into dance and performance that’s a little alternative, why not come and experience the Whitgift Centre in a completely new way?

What’s this, I hear you shout? Well, choreographers, Requardt & Rosenberg, and London’s creative powerhouse for dance development, The Place,  join together to take over the Whitgift Centre this weekend with Super Normal Extra Natural  – a new community-based performance where dancers and singers are joined by Croydon locals in this surprising dance spectacle, with timed performances from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 January.

And all for £1 a ticket for us residents.

Tell us more, you shout again. Well, we grabbed the Super Normal Extra Natural producer Hayley Miranda to do just that.

Croydonist: What can our readers expect if they visit the Whitgift Centre this weekend?

Hayley: Those visiting the Whitgift Centre this weekend can expect to experience the shopping centre from a whole new perspective, as dancers and performers enliven the space with a weird and wonderful show. Audiences, dotted around Whitgift Square, wear headphones for an intimate experience of the goings on in front of them. You may not know who is a performer, and who is not, but all will become clear with time…

Croydonist: Will we recognise any local Croydon performers?

Hayley: Yes! The cast of 45 performers includes students from Coulsdon Sixth Form college, and local Croydon community members, including four members from SLiDE community dance group.

Croydonist: As the event is ticketed, where in the Whitgift Centre does it take place?

Hayley: The event takes place in Whitgift Square in the Whitgift Centre. It’ll be right outside of the SuperDry. We’ll be set up with a Box Office table where Croydon residents can purchase £1 tickets (depending on availability). Should you like to book in advance, Croydon residents can purchase £1 tickets from Stanley Arts.

Thanks for chatting with us Hayley. We’ll see you there for something a little bit different from normal at the weekend.
