It ends with a crunch

29 May 2025

If you head down to Addiscombe today you’re sure for a big surprise – ok it’s not a teddy bears’ picnic, it’s better. Nestled in the heart of Addiscombe’s ever-evolving high street is Dirty Crunch, a place that’s part kitchen, part indie emporium, and all-round foodie heaven. On a sunny lunchtime venture, we stepped into this fresh, eclectic spot and discovered a little oasis of flavour and charm.

Think ‘East Dulwich deli’ meets ‘sunny Med holiday pantry’ with a Croydon twist. Wooden shelves lined with cookbooks, quirky cards, beautiful kitchenware, and a curated mix of wines, sauces, and our absolute favourite – olives in a can (don’t knock it ‘till you’ve tried them). There’s even a cold cabinet of fresh produce that practically begs to be Instagrammed.

But let’s talk about the food – which is what really got us crunching. See what I did there.

There is a daily menu, so expect there to always be new things to try, hence why I’ve been a few times to sample what’s on offer. We started with the Cottage Cheese Bruschetta, which arrived like a still life from a cookbook. It didn’t just look good, it was incredibly tasty. Simple, seasonal, and so satisfying.

Next up, the Satay Cauliflower Sandwich, a hands-down winner. I’m trying to create this myself as I loved it so much. This was a proper handful in all the right ways: spicy roasted cauliflower slathered in rich, nutty satay sauce, with crisp slaw and fresh herbs balancing every bite. It’s plant-based perfection that doesn’t skimp on punch or texture. Personally I think cauliflower is very underrated and this recipe proves it.

The Buffalo Mozzarella and Heritage Tomatoes came as a kind of deconstructed Greek salad with juicy tomatoes in shades, spring onion, cracked black pepper, and the creamiest mozzarella we’ve had this side of Athens, all generously drizzled in olive oil, transporting us straight to the Med. Another simple dish, but made with perfection with a slight twist.

If you’re after a flat white ‘to go’ or have at your leisure watching the world go by, Dirty Crunch delivers with locally roasted coffee that’s as smooth as it is strong. Prefer something a little more hoppy? Their fridge is stocked with craft beers, soft drinks and they also have a well stocked bar, perfect for pairing with your brunch or stashing away for a sunny garden sesh.

But Dirty Crunch isn’t just about the food and drink, it’s a lifestyle space with soul. Whether you’re picking up a jar of wild garlic pesto, browsing indie prints for your kitchen wall, or chatting cookbooks with the friendly team, it’s the kind of place that makes Addiscombe feel like the coolest little pocket of Croydon.

Our verdict? Dirty Crunch is the sort of gem you want to keep secret, but it’s too good not to share. Come hungry, leave with a tote bag full of inspiration (and possibly those olives in a can).

Dirty Crunch can be found at 290 Lower Addiscombe Road, Croydon, United Kingdom CR0 7AE. Follow them on Instagram.
